New Year Message

Tuesday 12 Jan 2021

Associated Clubs of Apprentice Boys of Derry.

General Committee.

As we prepare to welcome the beginning of a new year, it is doubtful if anyone could have predicted what was coming our way when we commenced 2020. The covid-19 virus has been an epidemic never witnessed by our generation.

This has been a year when we sadly lost several stalwarts from our ranks and many Brethren suffered the tragic bereavement of close family and friends. We hope and pray that God will be gracious in his compassion and comfort all members who mourn the loss of a loved one.

Despite the gloom of the year and the misery of Government restrictions, we still ensured the anniversaries of the Relief of Londonderry and the Shutting of the Gates were symbolically commemorated. Not with the usual flamboyancy or extravagance, but in a manner that articulated mature responsibility and gained respect from all sources to our crimson colours. After this difficult and challenging time, we eagerly look forward to resuming our usual meetings and proudly parading in celebration of our culture.

We have much to celebrate during this incoming year, with many significant dates highlighting important occasions during the establishment of Northern Ireland. Let us ensure that these special dates are remembered with pride, and our generation is not accused of abandoning nor neglecting the hard-earned triumphs secured by our forefathers.

As we prepare for the year ahead, we hope and pray the recent vaccines pioneered by scientists will enable us to return to normality and the current nightmare will soon become a distant memory. Until the virus is controlled and eradicated, let us continue to look after each other and demonstrate the true benevolence and compassion of our honourable brotherhood.

The Officers of General Committee thank all our members for their understanding, patience and support, during the previous extraordinary and difficult months and wish all Brethren, their family and friends, a safe, healthy and joyful new year.

Vita Veritas Victoria.

Graeme Stenhouse Governor.

William Moore General Secretary.
